Looking out the Window

Every now and then I go Downstairs to look out the window. I try to do this during the day, when there are very few little children and customers about, because when it is busy my Staff seems to think I should be Upstairs where they can keep an eye on me. I also go Downstairs a lot when my Assistant Boss Karen isn't around, because I can keep a lookout for her from the window.

The Downstairs window is very exciting. It looks like I am way up in the air from the Inside:

Snoopervising the juvenile books.
But if you go on the Outside, you can see that I am very near the ground!

How'd you get Outside?
This makes the Youth Department windows very nice places to watch Birdies! On the day these pictures were taken, I was watching a very plump and juicy-looking robin hopping along looking for stuff. It was very fun--until the Photographer went Outside and scared it away.

Speaking of robins. . . my girl-friend Kumari is a mighty Huntress. She brought AB Karen a robin through the pet door last week! I think she really brought it for me, but Karen didn't take the hint and bring it in to work with her. Karen says she's not sure if Kumari caught it herself or just found it and carried it in as a love-offering. I'm pretty sure Kumari did the deed, since she is beautiful, clever, and strong!

For those of you who remember Kumari from my earlier posts, I would like to let you know that she seems to be doing very well. She has a great appetite and is gaining weight. She is also playing a lot and getting along well with Karen's other animals and has discovered the Great Outside. I am hoping that she has a long and healthy life ahead of her, and that I will be reporting on her adventures for a very long time!

Wishing Karen had brought me that robin for a snack,

I met a real-life Author!

Last Wednesday we had a real-life Author come to the Library to kick off the Summer Reading Program for the little Downstairs readers. His name is Jim Aylesworth, and he writes books for small people. Helen did a bulletin board about him:

If you look really really close, you can see that he signed the bulletin board for us! Here, let me show you:

The program was Very Big Doings for the Downstairs Staff, and they spent all day putting up displays, setting up the meeting rooms, and preparing packets for the Reading Program. The small people and their mommies and daddies had a Very Good Time during the special program and we are all very glad that Mr. Aylesworth came to visit the Library.

I was Not Invited to the special program (I didn't want to steal the show!), but afterwards, Mr. Aylesworth came upstairs to meet me!

But I did not get a picture! Will you take my word for it?

Left Behind.

I was a very big help to Assistant Boss Karen in the last week. I helped her do paperwork,

warmed her chair, and even tried my paws at working the Adult Circulation desk.

Karen needed my expertise and support very much, and I did my best to help. I have been rewarded with my very own coffee cup--it says "Tober's Cup" (on the other side)--although Karen has decided that I probably shouldn't have coffee.

That is why I have not been able to post a blog lately.

But then, after all my hard work, Karen went on a Vacation and left me behind! Furthermore, she did not ask my permission to leave on Vacation, and by leaving, she is neglecting her very important responsibilities of petting me, giving me treats, and keeping me happy.

I first discovered her absence Saturday. I spent much of the day looking for her, going so far as to venture Downstairs. I thought perhaps she had gone Outside (she does that sometimes), so I went to the north door. Each time I went to the door, a staff member scooped me up and returned me to the Upstairs. This charade was repeated several times, until I was locked up in a office.

I have made my displeasure clear to the rest of the staff, so that they are sure to relay my unhappiness to Karen. They have assured me that she did not intend to hurt my feelings in any way, and will love me twice as much when she returns. I have heard that she is miserable on Vacation (because I am not with her), and she can't wait to return to the Library to see me. This is understandable, since I am a very handsome and lovable Cat, and I suppose I will have to forgive her.

The Assistant Assistant Bosses have assured me that everything possible will be done to keep me happy, and so far they have done a pretty good job. When I am locked up, it is always with a companion, and my meows are met with hugs and pets. I have been given many, many treats, and my tummy is frequently rubbed.

I suppose these Vacation things are permissible from time to time.

Now I must get back to instructing Cathie about the importance of neck massages.

Meows,

The Great Wide Open

First of all, let me apologize to you, devoted reader, for making you go over a week without news about my interesting life! Hopefully everyone had a happy happy Christmas. I did not get my hamster-in-a-ball or toenails. I've heard that this Mr. Santa Claus can be a bit unreliable at times. I'll have a talk with him when he visits next year. I have been spoiled and cuddled a lot in the last few days, so I guess I can let the lack of a personal assistant slide, too.

I am now the Thorntown Public Library Night Security Watchcat. This is a very favorite job for me, because it means that my door is left open every night. I am free to roam the building, inspect the facilities, and test the wonderful variety of seats (most cushioned!) that the Library has to offer. I have also discovered that my job has many, many more windows than I first suspected!

Originally, the plan included a daytime shift. There's only one problem with that. During the day, there are people all over this place! It's a bit overwhelming! I was doing good, moving from office to office when the library customers got a little too close for comfort, but my coworkers worry about my safety, especially when I try to go Downstairs.

Downstairs is fascinating and scary, all at the same time. The little folks are down there, as well as the Youth Department Staff. Everyone is friendly, but it's a little too much for me to handle. There are four doors Downstairs that lead to the Outside, and if I accidentally run out of one of them, I might not be able to get back in. Still, I am constantly tempted to visit Downstairs, and so my office door is shut a lot during the day.

My job as Night Security Watchcat keeps me very busy in the evenings. I have discovered that I now need to spend much of my day resting up for the following evening. My Assistant Bosses don't understand the difficulties of my evening duties, and have accused me of being a lazy snoozer.

Here I am refreshing myself with a nap, and kindly warming a coworker's seat at the same time.

Next week I will tell you about my Staff Display in the Adult Department. It is all about me. Isn't it always?

'Til next time!
